Hardy no match for GSP's mastery of the takedown

NEWARK, N.J. -- Another fighter stepped up to take on Georges St. Pierre, and just like the others, Dan Hardy got double-legged all night and pounded on the ground. But Hardy didn't give up or get embarrased. In fact, by the end of the night, the crowd, which seemed 99 percent against Hardy, applauded him for his toughness.

That said, toughness doesn't guarantee you a win against someone with superior technical ability. St. Pierre, who never wrestled in high school, has become a beast when it comes to taking down an opponent. In four of five rounds, it took GSP less than 25 seconds to score the first takedown. From there he worked in every dominant position, though he couldn't get Hardy to submit. The Brit showed guts -- he could've easily tapped from a first-round armbar or a fourth-round Kimura -- but he showed moxie in soldiering on. He lasted all five rounds, but St. Pierre again defended his UFC welterweight title via unanimous decision 50-43, 50-44, 50-45 in the main event at UFC 111.

St. Pierre almost looked shocked when Hardy didn't tap from the first-round armbar. The Kimura in the fourth round had Hardy straining in pain. On two occasions, his right hand was twitching ready to tap.

"I just asked him, I thought he was made of rubber," said St. Pierre, who immediately went into apology mode. "It's a win but I'm not very happy with myself."

UFC 114 Tickets On Sale Next Week

Did I mention that I'm already anxious to purchase my UFC 114 tickets? As a fan of the UFC and Ultimate Fighter (10), I can't wait to see the bout between Jackson and Evans. This fight has been a longtime coming and I'm glad to see Jackson's so called movie star status didn't prevent him from owning up to comments made to Evans!

Tickets for the recently announced "UFC 114: Jackson vs. Evans" go on sale next Thursday, March 25, beginning at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) for members of the UFC's official fan club.

Additionally, UFC.com newsletter subscribers can purchase tickets next Friday, March 26 at 1 p.m. ET, and the general public can purchase tickets on Saturday, March 27 at 1 p.m. ET.

UFC 114 takes place May 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and features a main event between former champions and "The Ultimate Fighter 10" coaches Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rashad Evans.

"It's no secret that Rampage Jackson and Rashad Evans don't like each other, and this rivalry has gotten more and more intense in the last few months," UFC president Dana White stated. "I can guarantee you that neither one of these guys wants to lose to [the] other. This fight is going to be insane."

Tickets for the event, which coincides with the UFC 2010 Fan Expo at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, range from $75 to $650.

The latest UFC 114 card includes:

WEC 47 and UFC 110 Numbers Down Dramatically from Recent Shows

A reliable source has confirmed that WEC 47 this past Saturday did a 0.46 household rating for a total of 373,000 viewers.

Trending data has UFC 110, headlined by a heavyweight bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, somewhere between 215,000 and 240,000 pay-per-view buys.

Both numbers are a drastic drop compared to recent numbers. The WEC event was down 42% from WEC 46, which drew 620,000, but also featured their proven #1 ratings draw in Urijah Faber. It was actually their second lowest rating (WEC 45 drew only 330,000 viewers in December; a card headlined by a non-title fight between Donald Cerrone and Ed Ratcliff) since WEC 34, headlined by the first meeting between Faber and Jens Pulver, set a promotional viewership best with 1.54 million.

UFC 110 can claim it was hurt by being a foreign show, which traditionally do lower pay-per-view numbers due to the fact that they're shown on tape delay at 10p.m. EST with the results already available online, but this show was shown live from Australia in their usual time slot. The 215,000-240,000 buys is significantly lower than the numbers for UFC 108, which is also being considered a huge disappointment despite a reported 300,000 buys. The average UFC pay-per-view offering in 2009 did 620,000.
